A major pain point and basic pain point with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations has always been understanding the licensing model and licensing needs and in a previous article we looked at how it was up to version 10.0.43 for which Microsoft announced that it would begin to enforce its licensing.
Understanding the licensing model has not become any easier as such, but Microsoft has put a laudable effort into providing tooling to help you make sure your users have the licenses they need. This is no small deal, as many organizations preferred to err on conservative side when figuring out licensing with the result of being over licensed. This stuff has been buggy causing some concern and frustration, but it was in preview so that is part of the deal... but in version 10.0.44 it has unfortunately taken out the old User License Counts and User License Estimator reports. No problem in 10.0.43 you could use the License usage summary at System administration > Security governance > License usage summary (preview).
Now go look for it in version 10.0.44, and low and behold... GONE. So what now? Well on LCS there is the License and capacity page that tell you what licenses you have available, assigned and required, but it's not obvious how to interpret these so here it is. The number of Available (how many you have purchased) - Required (how many you are using) = How many you are over or under.
But we all know that LCS is going to slowly go away and all this stuff will move into PPAC (Power Platform Admin Center). Well this same information is there too.
But if you are prepared to go through the pain to validate the numbers you will actually discover that there is something wrong. Hopefully it will be fixed by the time licensing in enforced.
P.S. The License usage summary form is included in preview in version 10.0.44 so you need to go enable it.
